Class Notes: November-December 2015


Hon. Daniel E. Nastro ’59 has been awarded the Pursuit of Justice Award by the American Bar Association Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section. The award, which recognizes lawyers and judges who have shown outstanding merit and who excel in providing access to justice for all, was presented at the TIPS welcome reception on October 15, 2015 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Bruce J. Graham ’63 has published his novel, And the Next President Is…, focusing on what happens after the death of the presidential election winner before the electoral college votes. Graham’s stories and articles have won awards and appeared in national magazines, including WWII Magazine and Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine.

John Boland ’64 was honored by the Nassau County Bar Association for his 50 years of membership on May 9, 2015 at their Annual Dinner Dance.

George Grasser ’64 was named “Buffalo Ambassador of the Year” by Visit Buffalo Niagara, the convention and tourism bureau for the Buffalo Niagara area, for his work as co-chair of the 2014 Congress for the New Urbanism that was held in Buffalo and attracted 1,355 people from 19 countries.

William J. Corbett ’65 recently attended the White House Conference on Aging, which has been held each decade since 1960 to identify and advance actions to improve the quality of life of older Americans.

Thomas J. Kavaler ’72 received the St. Thomas More Award at the 26th Annual Lawyers Luncheon of the Inner-City Scholarship Fund. Thomas More Award is given to those who exemplify the virtues of Saint Thomas: scholarship, leadership, loyalty to God and country, and service to the legal profession.

James Daw ’74 is beginning his third year as an attorney volunteer with the Bronx CLARO program, which is sponsored by the Feerick Center. He has also been involved with the Consumer Debt Clinic in Bronx Civil Court, where they prepare papers for low income and frequently desperate litigants, who are victimized by unscrupulous debt collectors. Daw states, “My experience with CLARO has turned out to be one of the most rewarding things I have ever done as a lawyer.”

Michael V. Mitrione ’75 has been recognized in the 2015 Chambers USA directory in the areas of Corporate/M&A & Private Equity and Banking & Finance – Transactional. Mitrione is a shareholder at Gunster, a 90-year-old full-service commercial law firm with 12 offices throughout Florida.

Lawrence Brennan ’77 lectured on the Iranian Hostage Rescue Mission at the New York Racquet Club on September 2015. Brennan was the JAG on board USS Nimitz, the ship which launched eight helicopters into Iran on April 24, 1980. He is a retired Navy Captain, an adjunct Professor (Admiralty and International Maritime Law) at Fordham Law, and a partner at Rubin, Fiorella & Firedman, LLP.

Glenn L. Newman ’78 recently joined Greenberg Traurig as a shareholder in the New York City office. He will focus his practice on tax planning and controversy matters involving state and local taxes including personal income tax, corporate tax, sales tax, and real property transfer taxes.

James E. Fitzgerald ’79 has joined Akin Gump as a partner in its litigation practice in Los Angeles. Fitzgerald, who has tried more than 40 trials in federal and state courts over the course of his career and handled more than 20 arbitrations, comes to Akin Gump from Stroock & Stroock & Lavan.

Christopher Lee ’79 volunteers on the Board of OCA-NY (formerly the Organization of Chinese Americans, New York Chapter), chairing the Civil Rights Committee, and Co-Chairing the Gala Committee, which was recently held on September 25, 2015.

Andrew Gilman ’80 is proud to announce two anniversaries: 30 years of marriage to his wife, Dianne Rudo and 30 years as CEO of CommCore Consulting Group, a crisis communications firm based in Washington, DC.

William M. O’Connor ’80 has been selected for inclusion in New York Metro Super Lawyers 2015 in his area of expertise in Creditor Debtor Rights. O’Connor is currently a partner at Thompson & Knight LLP.

Hon. Peter B. Skelos ’80 has joined NAM’s New York Metro Panel of Neutrals. Judge Skelos joins NAM after a long and illustrious judicial career which includes eleven years as an Associate Justice at the Appellate Division, 2nd Department. Judge Skelos has handled a wide variety of case types both as a judge and as a litigator including commercial, construction, professional liability, insurance coverage, medical malpractice, and personal injury.

Denis J. McInerney ’84 has been added to the Board of Directors of Sanctuary for Families, a service provider and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking and related forms of gender violence. McInerney is currently a partner at Davis Polk & Wardwell.

Jeffrey J. Miller ’84 will serve as the Executive Vice President, Senior Claims Officer for ACE Limited’s North America – Casualty, Workers Compensation and Accident & Health Insurance division. Currently, Miller is Senior Vice President, Worldwide Third Party Claim Manager and Senior Claim Legal Officer for Chubb, where he is responsible for the management and resolution of all claims in Casualty, Professional Liability and Workers Compensation business lines.

John F. Ward ’84 has joined Kelley Drye & Warren LLP as a partner in the firm’s New York and New Jersey offices. Ward has more than 30 years of experience litigating intellectual property cases, including complex, high-technology patent cases, at both the trial and appellate levels.

Glenn Kerner ’87 has been named to partner in overseeing Goodwin Procter’s national litigation practice. Kerner is the Head of Litigation in the firm’s New York office, concentrating his practice on complex mass torts and multidistrict litigation, with a focus on pharmaceutical, medical device and food litigation.

Juliet Moringiello ’87 was elected to the American College of Commercial Finance Lawyers in April 2015. In March 2015, she was appointed as a Uniform Law Commissioner for Pennsylvania.

Rose Gill Hearn ’88 has been awarded with the prestigious “Lumbard Bowl,” recognizing her as this year’s outstanding alumna among all former Assistant U.S. Attorneys from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. This prestigious selection reflects her contribution to public service, integrity, and the law, both as a federal prosecutor, and in her subsequent career, including her current leadership of the NYC Campaign Finance Board.

Maeve E. Cannon ’88 has joined Stevens & Lee as a shareholder. Cannon concentrates her practice in administrative law, regulatory compliance and public procurement and government contracts litigation.

Lynn Malzone Ierardi ’89, Director of Gift Planning at the University of Pennsylvania, was recently elected to the National Board of the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning. The Partnership for Philanthropic Planning is a 501(c)(3) public charity and leading professional organization, representing: fundraisers, estate and financial planners, trust officers, and other professional philanthropic planners throughout the United States.

Sharon L. McCarthy ’89 was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers (“the College”), one of the premier legal associations in North America. Fellowship in the College is extended by invitation only to those experienced trial lawyers who have mastered the art of advocacy and whose professional careers have been marked by the highest standards of ethical conduct, professionalism, civility and collegiality.

Jonathan Meyer ’90 has joined the Board of Advisors for Nuspay International. Meyer brings two decades of legal experience to the Nuspay Board of Advisors, with specialized knowledge in national security and international trade law.

Douglas Poetzsch ’90 will serve as the Executive Vice President, Senior Claims Officer for ACE Limited’s North America – Property and Professional Liability Insurance division. Currently, Poetzsch is Executive Vice President and Head of North American Claims for ACE, where he oversees six claims practices that handle the wide variety of commercial insurance products offered by ACE USA, ACE Westchester and ACE Commercial Risk Services.

Jeffrey Boxer ’92 has been named co-chair of Carter Ledyard & Milburn’s litigation department. Boxer’s practice focuses on general commercial, trade secret, restrictive covenant and employment litigation and arbitration.

Paul B. Sweeney ’92 has been named to the New York Super Lawyers 2015 list in his area of expertise in Litigation. Mr. Sweeney is currently a partner at Certilman Balin Adler & Hyman, LLP.

Eric F. Grossman ’93 was recently honored at Only Make Believe’s Annual Gala, Make Believe on Broadway, on November 9th, 2015 at the St. James Theatre in New York City. Grossman, the Chief Legal Officer of Morgan Stanley, was the honoree for the Only Make Believe Founders’ Award for his commitment to philanthropy.

Laura Michalec Olszewski ’93 recently accepted an appointment to become an Administrative Law Judge with the Social Security Administration. After almost 19 years as a trial attorney for the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security, Judge Michalec Olszewski is humbled and honored to have been selected and looks forward to continuing her career devoted to public service.

Michael M. McDaniel ’94 has joined Buffalo, NY law firm, Lipsitz Green Scime Cambria, as Special Counsel in the Intellectual Property Practice Group. McDaniel has extensive experience counseling businesses, both domestically and internationally, on a wide array of intellectual property matters.

Peter Nesvold ’97 has published his fourth book, The Art of M&A Valuation and Modeling, with McGraw-Hill. William Kilgallen ’98 married Cara Elana Erdheim on Saturday, June 27, 2015, at The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan. Kilgallen is currently Assistant Counsel at the Pratt & Whitney division of United Technologies Corporation.

Anne McCaughey ’98 joined Herrick Feinstein’s real estate department as counsel. She previously served as general counsel to the New York City Council’s Land Use Division, advising city council members on land use matters and development projects.

Michael J. Zinna ’99 has joined Kelley Drye & Warren LLP as a partner in the firm’s New York and New Jersey offices. Zinna’s practice comprises all aspects of intellectual property, with a focus on patent matters, representing patent holders and patent challengers in post-grant review proceedings before the U.S. Patent Trial & Appeal Board (PTAB).

David Aaron ’00 has recently received an Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service. Aaron is currently a trial attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice in the National Security Division.

Andrew Smith ’00 has been appointed to serve a second term as President of the New Jersey Association of Professional Mediators, New Jersey’s largest organization dedicated to resolving disputes through mediation. He also manages the Andrew Smith Law Group LLC, a firm that primarily practices in the areas of compliance and alternative dispute resolution.

Kevin Carroll ’01 has been named Deputy General Counsel of Babel Street, Inc. and promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve.

Michael Kahn ’01 has joined Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP as a partner in its intellectual property practice in New York. Kahn focuses on patent infringement disputes and related claims, such as trade secret misappropriation, unfair competition and breach of contract.

Courtney Birnbaum ’02 has joined Phillip Nizer LLP as counsel in its Corporate & Business Law and Real Estate departments, advising businesses and individual clients on contract, transactional and day-to-day business matters.

Damon W. Suden ’02 has been elected to partner at Kelley Drye & Warren LLP in his area of practice in litigation.

Bonnie Lynn Chmil ’04 has been elected to partner at Katten Muchin & Rosenman, LLP in her area of practice in litigation and dispute resolution.

Robert W. DiUbaldo ’04 has joined Carlton Fields Jorden Burt as a shareholder in the firm’s Insurance Industry Group. DiUbaldo counsels U.S. and international insurers and reinsurers in complex litigation, arbitration, and coverage matters. He was previously a partner at Locke Lord.

Vivian M. Arias ’07 has been selected for inclusion in New York Metro Rising Stars 2015 in her area of expertise in Creditor Debtor Rights. Arias is currently an associate at Thompson & Knight LLP.

John Reiss ’07 has been promoted to counsel at Shearman & Sterling in the firm’s Investment Funds Group.

Andrew T. Green ’09 has been promoted to partner at Dallas-based law firm McCathern, PLLC. Green practices in both civil litigation and transactional matters in McCathern’s Houston office.

Sarah Fitzgerald ’10 has been selected for inclusion in New York Metro Rising Stars 2015 in her area of expertise in Business Litigation. Fitzgerald is currently an associate in the Trial Practice Group at Thompson & Knight LLP.

Samantha Feingold-Criss ’11 and her husband Dr. Jonathan Criss welcomed their son, Miles Sebastian, on July 15, 2015.

Kaitlyn A. Kerrane ’12 married William A. Crowe ’13 in New York City on September 26, 2015. Many graduates from the classes of 2012 and 2013 were in attendance. Kerrane has also moved to Mintz Levin Cohn Glovsky and Popeo as an associate in the New York Litigation department.

Evonne Xu ’12 has been named to Michigan Lawyers Weekly “Up & Coming­­ Lawyers” Class of 2015 in her area of expertise in international law. Xu was one of only 30 honorees selected. She is currently an attorney at Howard & Howard Attorneys PLLC.

Christina Pryor ’13 has joined Davis, Polk & Wardwell LLP as a litigation associate. Pryor was previously working as a law clerk with Hon. Louis L. Stanton in the Southern District of New York.

Amanda L. Niederauer ’14 and Taylor H. Lukof were married in September at the home of the bride’s family in Far Hills, NJ. Niederauer is currently an associate at Riker Danzig Scherer Hyland & Perretti, a law firm in Morristown, NJ.
