The second annual Pre-Law Institute at Fordham Law is taking place from July 5 to August 8. The Pre-Law Institute is a five-week program designed to introduce participants to the U.S. legal system, U.S. law, and the study of law. The program is designed primarily for those thinking about attending law school but is open to all. Students receive three credits toward their undergraduate studies or may take the course on a non-credit basis.

The Pre-Law Institute includes an introduction to the U.S. legal system as well as classes on key areas of U.S. law and practice, such as constitutional law, legislation and regulation, foundations of private law (contract, property, and tort law), criminal law, criminal procedure, civil procedure and litigation, intellectual property and data privacy law, legal writing, and legal research. The program also offers the following sessions: Law School Admissions Basics, What Every 1L Should Know, and Story Telling and the Theory of the Case, as well as panels on Public Interest Lawyering and Law Practice in Action, led by practitioners from Skadden Arps, Solomon Duffy, Sanctuary for Families, and Lawyers Without Borders.

This year’s program has 38 participants, including students from and graduates of Barnard College, Berkeley College, Howard University, Fordham University, University of Michigan, and University of Pennsylvania, as well as other prestigious universities from the United States and abroad.

“We are very excited about this program,” said Assistant Dean Toni Jaeger-Fine, who directs the program. “We have drawn a diverse pool of talent from some of the nation’s most prestigious colleges and hope that the program continues to expand in the coming years.”

Visit the program web page for more details. Program dates for 2018 will be announced shortly.
