Dear Fordham Law Community,
As you may know, last week the Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) agency abruptly mandated that international students studying in the United States under an F1 visa must attend at least some in-person classes in the fall of 2020 or risk losing their immigration status. We write with the very good news that the Trump administration has just rescinded the July 6, 2020 rule. This change of policy presumably came about because of a number of lawsuits filed against I.C.E., including one filed by the New York State Attorney General.
The policy set forth in the July 6 I.C.E. communication was cruel and irrational, and we are pleased that the administration has withdrawn it. We do not know if additional information will be forthcoming, but for now, the pre-existing guidance, as updated, remains in effect. We will continue to monitor and communicate with you further developments.
We have been in close contact with the Office for International Services (OIS) and have been assured that they are ready and willing to assist all students with specific concerns and issues. Additionally, Assistant Dean Jaeger-Fine is available to answer questions.
Our international students are—and always have been—vital to our community and the Law School administration stands steadfast in supporting all of our international students. We will continue to advocate on their behalf and to explore ways in which to ensure their safety and security.
Sincerely,
Matthew Diller
