China’s ‘COVID Success Story’ Might Not End Well

Professor Carl Minzner was quoted in a World Politics Review article discussing China’s success in vaccinating its citizens against COVID-19. 

“With the wind at its back, Beijing has wasted no time in championing its authoritarian approach as a model for others to follow. But new questions about the efficacy of Chinese vaccines and a recent outbreak in the southern province of Guangdong are casting fresh doubts on China’s COVID success story.

Carl Minzner, a professor of Chinese law and politics at Fordham University, explained to The New York Times earlier this year that China’s success tackling the pandemic lies in its capacity to pull together all the resources of the one-party state. ‘This of course includes both the coercive tools—severe, mandatory mobility restrictions for millions of people—but also highly effective bureaucratic tools that are maybe unique to China,’ said Minzner.”
