On July 5, Fordham launched the Pre-Law Summer Institute, a five-week program designed to introduce participants to the U.S. legal system, U.S. law, and the study of law. The program is designed primarily for those thinking about attending law school but is open to all. Students receive three credits toward their undergraduate studies or may take the course on a non-credit basis.

The Pre-Law Institute includes an Introduction to the U.S. Legal System as well as classes on key areas of U.S. law and practice, such as Constitutional Law, Legislation and Regulation, Foundations of Private Law (contract, property, and tort law), Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Civil Procedure and Litigation, Legal Ethics and Professional Responsibility, Legal Writing, and Legal Research. The program also offers sessions on Law School Admissions Basics, What Every 1L Should Know, and Story Telling and the Theory of the Case, as well as panels on Professional Development and Law Practice in Action, both led by practitioners from the leading law firms of Dentons and Skadden Arps.

In this first year of the program, there are 34 participants, including students from and graduates of Bucknell, Boston College, Boston University, Chicago, Dartmouth, Fordham, University of Pennsylvania, Skidmore, University of Virginia, as well as other prestigious universities from the United States, Canada, France, Mexico, and Turkey.

“We are very excited about this new initiative,” said Assistant Dean Toni Jaeger-Fine, who directs the program. “We have drawn a diverse pool of talent from some of the nation’s most prestigious colleges and hope that the program continues to expand in the coming years.”

Visit the program webpage for more details. Program dates for 2017 will be announced shortly.
