Maxwell Meadows ’15 has received an Antitrust Section Law Student Fellowship from the New York Bar Foundation. Meadows will receive $6,000 to work this summer in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in New York City.
“I am excited to have been selected by the New York Bar Foundation to serve as a fellow with the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice,” said Meadows. “Working alongside the staff of the New York field office on criminal prosecutions of antitrust violations is a fantastic opportunity to learn and to protect consumers by enforcing laws central to a fair system of competition.”
A graduate of the College of William and Mary, Meadows has long maintained an interest in antitrust issues and consumer protection. In grade school, as a Boy Scout, he designed and completed projects that benefitted local consumers. “My projects had always been to make people’s lives better and easier from a consumer protection angle,” he said. For one of his requirements to reach the rank of Eagle Scout, Meadows used auto-dialer machines from Radio Shack to help his county develop a cost-effective pilot program of Life Alert-style emergency dialers for the elderly.
In September, Meadows began interning at the Federal Trade Commission, where he has worked on legal research, document review, and various other tasks for civil antitrust cases. Meadows will continue his work at the FTC this semester until he begins work at the Department of Justice.
Meadows hopes that these experiences will allow him to continue in the antitrust field after graduation. “I want to practice in antitrust and in the long term I want to work in state or federal government,” he said.
Meadows credits the Fordham Law curriculum for allowing him to expand his interest in antitrust law. Due to Fordham’s expansive course offerings, he was able to enroll in classes that touched on antitrust-related topics and also to use his internship at the FTC for academic credit. Meadows has also had the good fortune to find mentors for his interests at Fordham Law. “I lucked out in that my contracts professor, Professor Mark Patterson, does antitrust, so I was able to start getting advice on that early,” he said.
