On July 7, Fordham Law begins two annual summer programs, the Summer Institute and the Corporate Compliance Institute.

This year’s Summer Institute will draw over 140 participants from more than 35 countries around the world, making it the largest Summer Institute in the program’s 8-year history. The program aims to train international lawyers and students to become successful lawyers and professionals in today’s globalized economy. Participants will receive an introduction to the U.S. legal system and instruction in important areas of U.S. law. The Institute features courses taught by several Fordham Law faculty including Sean J. Griffith, Thomas H. Lee, and Sonia K. Katyal. The Summer Institute offers courses in several areas such as Bankruptcy Law, Civil Procedure and Litigation, and U.S. Tax Law and Policy. It also features optional legal English and special workshops on topics such as Contract Drafting and Negotiation, Memorandum Drafting, Legal Research, and Litigation Documents, that aim to strengthen participants’ English skills. Participants will further enjoy networking opportunities through the program’s organized social gatherings, including happy hour at a local bar and a major league baseball game. The 2014 Summer Institute will run from July 7 through July 25.

Now in its second year, the Corporate Compliance Institute (CCI) offers a one-week training program on the role and fundamentals of corporate compliance, particularly in the financial services sector. The CCI program offers classes and case studies led by Fordham Law professors and industry professionals, many of whom are Fordham alumni from both the Law School and the Business School, as well as a daily luncheon featuring a lecture by a prominent compliance professional. The program is directed by Professor Sean J. Griffith, Director of the Fordham Corporate Law Center, and Mario DiFiore, Assistant Dean of Fordham Business School, both of whom will also be teaching in the program. Other faculty and guest speakers include Stuart Breslow, Chief Compliance Officer, Morgan Stanley; Gerald Manwah, Global Head of Compliance Risk and Control/Managing Director, Barclays; Joseph Burke, Chief Compliance Counsel, Dell, Inc.; Michael Herde, Global Head of Compliance, GE Capital, and many more.

Attendees of the CCI program will receive instruction in several areas surrounding the issue of compliance including The State of Compliance Today; Developing an Effective Compliance Program; Financial Crime: Bribery, Corruption, Sanctions, and Foreign Asset Control; and Internal Investigations and Crisis Management. In addition, CCI attendees will be able to receive CLE credit at no charge in the areas of Ethics, Law Practice Management, Skills and Professional Practice. The 2014 CCI program will run from July 7 through July 11.
