Fordham Law School Professor Olivier Sylvain spoke with the Wilson Times in North Carolina explaining why he believed the city had a strong case in its broadband petition against the Federal Communications Commission.
“Wilson’s an exciting place because it’s North Carolina,” Sylvain said. “The story of an old tobacco town trying to turn around is very interesting.” Sylvain and Nestor Davidson, a law professor and director of the Fordham Urban Law Center, co-authored a Sept. 6 Wall Street Journal column, favoring the city’s petition request that the FCC use its pre-emption authority to overturn state law that restricts the expansion of the city’s broadband network, Greenlight. Chattanooga, Tennessee also petitioned the FCC but Sylvain found Wilson’s case more interesting because of the efforts of local leaders to reinvent the economy formerly supported by the tobacco industry.
