Fordham Law School Professor Deborah Denno spoke with The Orlando Sentinel about a South Carolina mother’s sterilization offer to avoid repeating a mental breakdown that led her to drive her van into the ocean with her three children inside.
While psychosis from pregnancy and postpartum depression have been used as a defense in other cases, an offer of sterilization is rare, according to Deborah Denno, a law professor at Fordham Law School who is not involved in Wilkerson’s case.
“It’s highly unusual and quite controversial,” Denno said.
