New York Governor Mario Cuomo’s stance on the minimum wage over the years has shifted greatly, with pressure coming to a head in May of 2014 when the labor-aligned Working Families Party wanted to endorse Fordham Law School professor Zephyr Teachout, according to State of Politics on NY1.
In order to secure the WFP’s endorsement, Cuomo announced in a video he would back a new wage hike.
“I support a minimum wage of President Obama’s $10.10 indexed so you don’t have to continually update it, with an adjustment factor for up to 30 percent for the cost of living across different markets in this state,” Cuomo said in the video.
Cuomo won the WFP’s endorsement, but months later he released a campaign book — more than a month his Democratic primary win over Teachout — that suggested a shift.
