Execution records pierce veil of secrecy surrounding process

Deborah Denno speaks to the Tulsa World about the secrecy statutes that limit what people can find out about the process of lethal-injection executions.

“These secrecy statutes are designed to cover up problems,” said Deborah Denno, a Fordham University law school professor who has authored studies on the death penalty.

Without the kind of facts uncovered in the documents, it could “allow the state to continue covering up these kinds of incompetence,” Denno said.

“All of these secrecy statutes do such an injustice to us all and really elevate the likelihood that there’s going to be unconstitutional and inhumane execution,” Denno said.

Transparency regarding the process is something both pro- and anti-death penalty people should agree on, Denno said.

“Nobody wants incompetency to be shielded,” she said.
