Foreign-trained lawyers and law students have flocked to Fordham Law’s summer programs in New York for years.
This summer, the Office of International and Non-J.D. Programs is expanding its offerings with two new programs—one focused on transactional skills for global legal practice, the other on legal English and communication skills.
Assistant Dean Toni Jaeger-Fine says the transactional skills course covers critical skills for global legal professionals as well as the opportunity for them to learn from and network with some of New York City’s most prominent lawyers and judges.
Toni Jaeger-Fine: “The program has a really impressive array of co-sponsors. We have firms like Dentons; Ladas and Parry; Skadden Arps; White and Case; Cravath, Swain and Moore; Schulte Roth and Zabel; and Sidley Austin. We also have Credit Suisse as one of our sponsors. Lawyers from these firms are going to help us introduce participants to drafting and other transactional skills needed for transnational legal practice. The program will feature very much hands-on practical training, with written assignments and role-play exercises in class. There will also be a number of networking receptions at some of our sponsor law firms. The program runs from July 20th to the 31st.”
The other new summer program is actually delivered in two parts, as intensive two-week programs that will introduce foreign-trained legal professionals to legal English, as well as to both professional and academic communications.
Toni Jaeger-Fine: “The Legal English course focuses on oral skills in understanding, analyzing, and presenting American legal materials succinctly and confidently, and it also engages students to be an active participant in a U.S. law classroom and in the U.S. legal profession. The course on Communication Skills gives participants knowledge of writing mechanics and will improve their ability to communicate ideas and legal principles clearly and precisely in English. Participants may register for either or both of the two-week intensive courses offered through this program. Both courses will have oral and written assignments and participants will receive individualized feedback. We’re really very excited about offering these new opportunities to international students and legal professionals.”
