Public schools are the public’s business — the entire public. Members of that public should look out for one another, practice empathy, and be prepared for give and take. But every person should feel entitled to advocate for his preferences before his public school board. And no board official should feel foreclosed, within the limits of the law, from making trade-offs that her constituents — all her constituents — have elected her to make.
