Judge Michael J. Garcia of the New York State Court of Appeals has been named Fordham Law’s “Jurist in Residence.”
Judge Garcia has established his chambers at the Law School, where he will remain through the 2016-17 academic year. His clerks will also have offices at the Law School. He will have no official duties at the School but will be a valued member of the School community. The “Jurist in Residence” is a partnership between the court and the Law School that

enables law students and faculty to benefit from informal interactions with the judge and his clerks.
Judge Garcia was confirmed on February 8, 2016, after his nomination by Governor Andrew Cuomo. He served as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York from 2005-2008 and as a partner at Kirkland & Ellis between 2009 and 2016. He previously served as assistant secretary for immigration and customs enforcement (2003–2005), acting commissioner of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (2002–2003), assistant secretary of commerce for export enforcement (2001–2002), and assistant U.S. attorney in the Southern District of New York (1992–2001). He was a law clerk to Judge Judith Kaye and graduated from Albany Law School.
“We enthusiastically welcome Judge Garcia, and we thank him and the court for joining us in this partnership that provides students and faculty a great opportunity to meet and learn from an important leader of New York’s legal community,” said Matthew Diller, dean of Fordham Law School.
Judge Garcia said, “I look forward to my interactions with Fordham’s students and faculty, and I appreciate the warm welcome I have received to this vibrant institution.”
