Culturally Appropriative Halloween Costumes Create Controversy Nationwide

Professor Susan Scafidi’s book “Who Owns Culture? Appropriation and Authenticity in American Law” was mentioned in a Los Angeles Loyolan article about cultural appropriation. According to the article, universities across the nation, including LMU, are confronting issues of cultural appropriation, which are heightened during Halloween.

 

According to Susan Scafidi, law professor from Fordham University and author of “Who Owns Culture? Appropriation and Authenticity in American Law,” cultural appropriation is the act of “taking intellectual property, traditional knowledge, cultural expressions or artifacts from someone else’s culture without permission.”
