    Ex-Rikers Island Guard Is Found Guilty in Inmate’s Death

    Fordham Law alumna Brooke E. Cucinella ’06 prosecuted the case against former Rikers Island guard Brian Coll, recently found guilty of violating the civil rights of a seriously ill inmate who died after Coll repeatedly kicked him.

    A prosecutor, Brooke E. Cucinella, said in a closing argument on Wednesday, “This is a case about wielding power against those that are helpless, when they are at their most vulnerable, when they are weakest, held down on the floor, arms behind their back, and getting away with it because you can, because Mr. Spear was an inmate.”

     

    “And it was Rikers Island,” she added. “No one was going to stand up to Brian Coll.”
