Glenn J. Pogust ’80 has been awarded the inaugural Jonathan Lippman Pro Bono Award by the Senior Lawyers Section of the New York State Bar Association. Pogust received the award, which recognizes dedicated senior lawyers who have generously provided pro bono service in New York, on January 26 during the association’s annual meeting in New York City.

“Mr. Pogust has made pro bono work an integral part of his professional life, providing essential legal services to low-income New Yorkers who otherwise would not have the benefit of counsel,” said the Section Chair Carole A. Burns. “His commitment to the cause of equal access to justice is an inspiration to all of us and personifies the qualities inherent in an award honoring former Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman.”

Pogust, senior counsel with Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer, defends manufacturers of a wide variety of products in personal injury and property damage cases. Pogust is an active member of the firm’s pro bono committee as well as chair of its pro bono immigration practice group. From January to September 2016, Pogust provided 190 hours of pro bono work.

Last year, Pogust began supervising 25 associates and summer associates on their pro bono cases, allowing the firm to serve a greater number of low-income clients. Pogust is also a member of the firm’s virtual pro bono law firm, a group of senior litigators who take on complex cases with the aim to address serious injustice.

The award is named after Jonathan Lippman, chief judge of the New York Court of Appeals from 2009 through 2015. He is currently of counsel at Latham & Watkins’ New York office, where he is a leader of its pro bono practice, with a focus on matters about access to justice. Lippman also helps lead Fordham Law’s Access to Justice Initiative.
