Feerick Center Updates and Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Opportunities include:
1. The Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island CLARO Programs, where volunteer attorneys provide limited-scope legal advice and assistance to New Yorkers in need at court-based clinics;

  • A Basic CLARO Training is scheduled for Wednesday, March 8, 2016, from 6pm – 9pm at the Law School. For more information about these volunteer opportunities, please contact Assistant Dean Robert J. Reilly.

2. The LEEAP Consumer Component, which places volunteer attorneys with legal services organizations to assist economically-distressed consumers with consumer debt and related matters;

3. The LEEAP Education Component, which trains volunteers to assist low-income students and families navigate the complex New York City public high school application process; anD

4. The New York State Attorney Emeritus Program, an initiative of the New York State Chief Judge which supports civil pro bono by attorneys 55 years and over;

5. The Feerick Center is also looking for volunteers to participate in an alumni trip through the CARA Family Detention Pro Bono Program in Dilley, Texas from June 26, 2017 to July 1, 2017. Volunteers provide limited-scope legal assistance to asylum-seeking families detained at the South Texas Family Residential Center. No prior immigration experience is required. Spanish- and Creole-speakers are strongly encouraged to apply. For more information, please contact Bree Bernwanger.

6. Holy Family Women’s Winter Refuge is in need of volunteers. The location is the basement of the United Nations Parish, Holy Family, at 315 E. 47thStreet across from the U.N. To sign up, click here!
For the volunteers there are two jobs:
1. Overnight: Two people stay overnight with the women and sleep on the stage. One volunteer is always a man. Two women will never be scheduled to do the overnight just in case. And also, a veteran-volunteer is always scheduled with new volunteers.
2. Hot Meal: A volunteer commits to cooking and bringing to the shelter a hot meal for up to 15 people. The number of actual guests fluctuates based on weather/demand.
