Adjunct Professor Matt Gold Discusses NAFTA On SiriusXM, Business Radio

By Newsroom on May 2, 2017 Faculty, In the News, Transition to Trump

Adjunct Professor Matt Gold was interviewed on Knowledge@Wharton (the business interview program of U Penn’s Wharton School) about Trump’s vow to renegotiate NAFTA and its effect on softwood lumber issues.

“There are a lot of reasons why Donald Trump is probably, in my view, the single worst negotiator who’s ever set foot in the White House. And when I say ‘ever set foot in the White House,’ I’m including everyone who’s ever been on the tour.”

    …

“Our market is much bigger than Canada’s market or Mexico’s market. But, having a bigger market only gives you bigger leverage in a trade negotiation in two situations, neither of which exist here. One is when you’re bringing that market into the trade agreement for the first time, and the other is if you can credibly threaten to pull your market out.… We’re not credibly making that threat, because we can’t. And in that situation you have really three countries that are handcuffed together. Each country knows that the other countries can’t pull out. [E]ach country understands that no change will be made unless all three countries agree….  [Thus] each country has exactly the same leverage as the other countries.…  So … the U.S. has to have some patience and humility if we want to accomplish something, which is not something we’re seeing from the Trump Administration.”
