A Constitutional Convention for New York?

Adjunct Professor Jerry Goldfeder’s letter to the editor about New York’s constitutional convention was published in the New York Times.

I supported a constitutional convention 20 years ago, the last time voters were called upon to consider the issue.

Despite my lifetime advocacy for campaign finance and ethics reform, subjects to be taken up at a convention, I have reluctantly concluded that the delegate selection process is sufficiently flawed as to be unlikely to yield positive change in state government.

Worse, a convention may undermine or eviscerate important constitutional provisions (like reproductive, environmental and worker protections). On balance, it poses more risks than opportunities. As in 1997, the voters should reject a constitutional convention in November.
