    Canada And Mexico Rebuke Trump at Tense Start of NAFTA Talks

    Adjunct Professor Matt Gold was quoted in a Financial Times article about trade policies and NAFTA renegotiation under the Trump administration.

    “Canada and Mexico are living in a world of reality. Mr Lighthizer is living in a world of Donald Trump,” said Matt Gold, a former deputy assistant US Trade Representative for North America.

     

    Mr Trump had backed himself into a corner by making big promises on Nafta, he said, and now faced US midterm elections next year as well, having promised major changes that he might not be able to deliver on.Analysts also question how much real leverage the US has with American farmers, most Republicans in Congress and the vast majority of the business community keen for Nafta to survive, and both Canada and Mexico are aware of that.
