The Westchester, Rockland, Putnam news journal, Lohud, published an in-depth profile on freshman New York State senator and Fordham Law alumna, Alessandra Biaggi ’12 that details her journey to the state Senate.
“Our job is to represent the people and the people need to have the knowledge to be involved and to come through the door. And for so many years, Albany has functioned as a place where it’s an insider’s game,” said Biaggi. “I feel like it’s now my responsibility to keep everyone informed whether that’s just sharing a video with my constituents, getting women off the sidelines to run or getting women into government.”

During her first six months, Biaggi has been part of passing key reforms including codifying key Obamacare provisions into law, eliminating cash bail for most nonviolent felony offenses, banning plastic bags, increased funding for education and passing congestion pricing to fix subways and railroads, thanks to the Democrats wining control of New York’s government last year.But perhaps one of her biggest wins has been leading the first public hearings on workplace sexual harassment in 27 years. After months of advocacy, the legislature ended its session on June 19 with a plan for tougher sexual harassment laws. The newly strengthened rent regulations in tenants’ favor was another win she had been pushing for.
