October 9, 2023 Dear Fordham Law Community, We have all watched Hamas’ attack on Israel and the violence that has followed with horror and anguish. The photos and videos in the media of mass killings, kidnapped women and children, distraught grieving family members, and widespread destruction in Israel and Gaza are difficult to bear. As I write, literally millions of people are huddled in bomb shelters struggling to survive. The conflict between Israel and the Palestinians is complex and long standing, but attacks on civilians are abhorrent and unjustifiable. They not only exact an incalculable human toll, they also deepen the divisions and fuel more bloodshed in the future. I know that members of our community are directly impacted – both through the loss of and concern for loved ones in Israel and Gaza and the fear that the violence will trigger further attacks around the world. My thoughts and prayers are with all of the members of our community, including students, their families, alumni, and the wider Fordham community in Israel and Gaza. Individuals directly impacted can seek assistance both through the Law School’s Office of Student Affairs and University Counseling Center. I understand that many in our community have deeply held views about the conflict. I ask that we all bear in mind that some individuals have loved ones at risk and that moments like this tend to exacerbate both antisemitism and anti-Muslim bias. People within our community understandably feel vulnerable and afraid. I ask that as we express our strongly held views, we do so with respect and understanding for other members of our community. Please extend support to those who are grieving and in distress. I pray for those who have been lost, for their loved ones and for a speedy end to the violence and bloodshed. With warm regards, |
