Meet Pavel Koivistoinen, LL.M. ’23

0

Pavel Koivistoinen, LL.M. ’23 is the former legal director of Next Games, the first publicly listed mobile games developer and publisher in Finland. Now, he is in the midst of leveling up his own legal education through Fordham Law’s LL.M. program in Corporate Compliance.

Where did you study before Fordham Law?

University of Helsinki in Finland.

Why did you choose Fordham Law?

I chose Fordham Law for its location in New York City and the unique corporate compliance specialization, which is not available at other local law schools.

What are you involved in at the Law School?

My prior professional area of expertise was in anti-corruption compliance. The corporate compliance concentration of my LL.M. studies, coupled with an externship opportunity that I found through Fordham Law, have helped me expand my expertise in financial compliance and grow my network. My current externship is with Capstone, a hedge fund where I’m getting first-hand experience in the implementation of policies and procedures for compliance under the new Private Fund Adviser rules revised by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission this past August. Thanks to Fordham Law’s “Network Effect,” I was able to connect with a Fordham Law School alumna, Anais Benhassaine LL.M. ’19, for this externship opportunity, for which I’m so grateful.

What has been your favorite experience at the Law School?

I have enjoyed the opportunity to closely and effortlessly interact with the professors and faculty. Everyone has been very helpful and proactive to support us, the students, in our studies, job search, networking, and visas. I have been very relieved to observe that our law school is not a remote and bureaucratic structure, but a warm, welcoming, and caring alma mater. Also, everyone on the faculty has a great personality and has been helpful to listen to. I have found all my classes to be very entertaining and interesting.

What do you hope to do when you graduate?

I hope to work with compliance matters in the New York metropolitan area.

After I complete my studies in December, I plan to sit for the bar exam and will be working at the global logistics company Kuehne+Nagel as a regional compliance manager in their New Jersey office.
