Alyssa Shields, M.S.L. ’23 was debating between a career in law or a career in finance when she discovered Fordham Law’s online Corporate Compliance Program, which, she says, was the “perfect fit.”
Shields currently works as a senior compliance associate at a financial market infrastructure provider that delivers settlement, processing, and data solutions.
In a year’s time, the program not only equipped Shields with the skills needed to protect her organization from risk amid constant regulatory changes, but provided her with New York City connections and a global alumni network. Said Shields, “The MSL helped me land this role. The hiring manager was familiar with the program and knew that Fordham had prepared with the skills to be successful.”
Since graduating, Shields has built her compliance network in the heart of New York City—one of the corporate capitals of the world—and enjoys returning to the Lincoln Center campus for Fordham Law-sponsored events.

Liberty University
What has your career journey been like?
I began my career as a liability adjuster at a major insurance company, then transitioned to the legal department where I handled subrogation, motions for summary judgment, and eventually focused on bodily injury claims. Following that experience, I joined a law firm’s corporate law department before moving into the fintech industry where I am currently employed.
Why did you decide to pursue a M.S.L.?
I aimed to pursue a career in law but wasn’t sure I wanted to practice law, making the M.S.L. program a perfect fit for me.
Why did you choose Fordham Law?
I was certain that I wanted to pursue a career in finance, and Fordham Law alumni are particularly sought after, especially within the finance industry here in New York.
What made the Fordham M.S.L. program special and beneficial to you?
The “Fordham family” isn’t a cliché. It’s a real thing! I’ve forged incredible relationships, not only with fellow students but also with faculty and professionals who I’ve connected with at Fordham Law events. These individuals have offered invaluable career advice that guided me through the finance industry. Even after graduation, members of the Fordham Law faculty have remained readily accessible to answer any questions—and returning to campus for events always feels like coming home.
What was your favorite class in the program?
My most enjoyable class was Compliance Risk Assessment taught by Lisa Sheppard-Davenport, director, compliance program management at AT&T, who remains one of my favorite people. She is a dedicated instructor who ensures her students thoroughly grasp the curriculum rather than simply progressing through it. The skills I acquired in this course directly apply to my daily work responsibilities.
Did you participate in any internship, externship, or mentorship programs during your time in the program?
I took part in Fordham Law’s mentorship program with financial services company Affirm. I was matched with Molly Pluciennik, a compliance lead at the company, who assisted me with interview preparation and crafting a resume, ultimately leading to my current position.
How has the M.S.L. helped advance your career?
Once again, I must acknowledge the invaluable support from Fordham Law’s alumni network and faculty. Through events, conferences, and other interactions, they consistently provide me with speaking opportunities, career advice, and job prospects. Fordham Law is truly committed to your success and ensures you never feel isolated.
Would you recommend the program to others?
Yes, without a doubt. I actively recommend prospective students to enroll and motivate current students to make the most of all that Fordham Law has to offer. This program presents numerous opportunities, and you will get back everything you put in.
