Fordham Law’s Black Law Students Association Builds Community for Black History Month

0

The Black Law Students Association (BLSA) at Fordham Law School fosters community among Black law students, empowering them to excel in their studies, succeed in their careers, and make a positive impact in the legal profession and beyond. In honor of Black History Month, BLSA President Feyi Idera ’26 discussed the importance of the group’s presence on campus for law students, its goals for the year, and how students can get involved.

Why is it important to have an organization like BLSA at Fordham Law School?

Fordham BLSA provides a community for Black law students to thrive academically, professionally, and socially. It works to increase academic success through hosting workshops, review sessions, and mock exams.

Professionally, BLSA connects members to career development opportunities through networking events, panel discussions, and career workshops that equip students with the tools to succeed. These events provide direct access to attorneys from sponsored firms who offer guidance, share insights, and help students navigate the legal profession. Socially, it creates a space where students can lean on one another for support and build lifelong relationships that begin at Fordham, but extend far beyond its walls.

Most importantly, Fordham BLSA cultivates a culture of giving back, where members are always looking to uplift and support those who come after them, ensuring that each generation of Black law students has the resources and encouragement to succeed.

What are BLSA’s goals for this academic year?

BLSA’s goals for this academic year are to continue supporting Black law students in every way possible, whether academically, professionally, or personally. We strive to provide resources that help students excel in their coursework, connect them with career opportunities through networking events and mentorship, and create a welcoming space where they can relax and unwind.

Beyond that, BLSA is committed to fostering a strong sense of community, ensuring that students always have a support system to turn to for encouragement and guidance. Our mission is to uplift and empower our members, making sure they have everything they need to succeed through the end of the year and beyond.

Why is it important to celebrate Black History Month?

It honors the achievements, contributions, and resilience of Black individuals throughout history while recognizing the struggles they have faced and continue to overcome. It provides an opportunity to educate, reflect, and acknowledge the profound impact Black leaders, activists, scholars, and everyday individuals have had on shaping society.

Black History Month also furthers a sense of pride and empowerment within the Black community while encouraging broader discussions on diversity, equity, and inclusion. By celebrating Black history, we ensure that these stories and accomplishments are not overlooked but instead serve as inspiration for future generations to continue striving for progress and justice.

What does BLSA have in store for Black History Month?

We have many events in store for Black History Month. Some that are on campus and students should know about are the BLSA Documentary Showing on Civil Rights Leaders on February 11, a fundraiser for Red Hook Community Justice Center on February 13, an Appellate Brief Workshop with Director Ames on February 18, and the Jurist Day in Residence Lecture featuring Judge J. Michelle Childs on February 26. Stay tuned for a community service event and social event in February as well!

How can students get involved?

Students can get involved in BLSA’s Black History Month events—and year round events!—by showing up to whatever they have the capacity for, given the demands of law school. All are welcome to participate, learn about the rich history of the Black community, and celebrate the contributions and resilience of Black individuals. Whether attending a panel, fundraiser, or social gathering, every moment of engagement helps create a stronger, more inclusive community. BLSA encourages everyone to take part in whatever way they can and be a part of the celebration.
