With a background in environmental governance and urban planning, Fordham Law’s practical education drew Chris Freire ’25 to the J.D. program. The Realizing Excellence and Access in Law Scholars (REAL) program provided Chris with a supportive community throughout his studies and access to alumni who provided advice and mentorship. He spent his 2L summer at Norton Rose Fulbright and is returning there after graduation to work on energy and infrastructure projects. His long-term goal is to become an expert in this field and help build projects that empower and connect communities.
What is your hometown, and where did you study before Fordham Law?
I’m originally from Coram, NY. But I’ve been living in New York City since 2012 and now call Queens my home. I studied history and environmental governance at the Macaulay Honors College at Hunter. After working for a few years, I returned to Hunter as a graduate student for its Master of Urban Planning program.
Why did you choose Fordham Law?
I chose Fordham Law because of its strong academic reputation, its emphasis on practical education, and its global alumni network. And while studying law in New York City, there are countless opportunities to develop your network and career. You’re surrounded by some of the brightest people and most important institutions in the world.
Is there something special you have been involved in at Fordham Law you can share with us?
I had the honor of participating in the Realizing Excellence and Access in Law Scholars (REAL) program at Fordham Law. The program connected me not only to a cohort of peers who became dear friends but also to experienced alumni who provided me with mentorship and support.
What has been your favorite experience at Fordham Law?
I had the opportunity to partake in two clinics at Fordham Law: the Human Rights Clinic led by Professor Chi Mgbako and the Corporate Social Responsibility Clinic led by Professor Paolo Galizzi. In both, we helped international clients navigate and respond to complex legal and policy challenges. I highly recommend these clinics to students interested in gaining practical experience and producing meaningful results for real clients.
Do you have any plans after graduation?
I spent my 2L summer at Norton Rose Fulbright, and I’m returning there after graduating to work on energy and infrastructure projects. My long-term career plan is to become an expert in my field of work and to help build projects that empower and connect communities.
What advice would you give to incoming 1Ls?
The 1L year is a challenge. It presents a tough learning curve and a large workload. But don’t spend the entire year studying. Get outside. Make time for your friends and family. Prioritize your health. Practice gratitude and resilience. And don’t forget about your reason for pursuing a legal education in the first place.
