On October 13, Fordham Law’s 27th Annual Student Excellence Awards ceremony took place over Zoom. Presented to the students in the first-year mini-sections, the second-year day and evening programs, and the third-year evening program, the awards honored dozens of students who attained the highest weighted average for their studies throughout the 2020-2021 academic year. “Normally, celebrations and honors like this take place at graduation, so it’s very special to be able to pause in the middle of a busy school year to honor you and to celebrate your achievements,” said Dean Matthew Diller during the event’s opening remarks. “I also…

On October 8, the Fordham Intellectual Property, Media & Entertainment Law Journal (IPLJ) hosted its 29th annual symposium titled “IP Interrupted: Diverse Voices in Intellectual Property.” Speakers presented on a host of subjects that dealt with the unique ways in which intellectual property impacts marginalized groups. “For me, being an African American woman, I realized that people who look like me aren’t often in the forefront of the intellectual property space,” said Gina Boone ’22, symposium editor for the IPLJ. “And so my idea in coming up with the theme for this year’s symposium was to amplify diverse voices on…
On September 30, Fordham Law students attended a virtual panel event about the ongoing crisis at Rikers Island. The event was organized by Advocates for the Incarcerated (AFTI), a Fordham Law student advocacy group run out of the school’s Public Interest Resource Center. Deteriorating conditions at the correctional facility have garnered headlines in recent weeks, but little has changed for incarcerated people, advocates say. On September 19, a 42-year-old man died while in custody at Rikers bringing the total number of deaths to 11 this year—at least five of which were determined to be suicides. State Senator Alessandra Biaggi ’12,…
On September 19, Fordham Law students along with their parents, spouses, grandparents and other family members, attended a virtual Family Day. The annual event is an opportunity for “first-year students to share their law school experiences with friends and family,” says Susan Kalicharan-Garcia, associate director of Student Affairs. “Through various presentations given by the Dean, faculty, administrators, and students, families learned about the outstanding people and programs that make Fordham one of the best places to study law in the country.” This year’s event, held over Zoom, had approximately 125 participants and included a Q&A portion, information about Fordham Law’s…
On September 24, more than 120 female lawyers and law students, along with male allies, attended the first week of the RISE Leadership Academy for Women in Law, an eight-week-long online program designed to empower women working in law to pursue leadership positions. Participants from a dozen countries attended the event, coming from a range of legal experiences. The morning meetings are scheduled to take place over the next eight Fridays and will include speakers from a variety of backgrounds, including private practitioners, in-house counsel, government attorneys, and scholars. “Over the coming weeks, we will explore strategies that women can…
On September 14, 2001, just three days after the most deadly terrorist attack on American soil, the leaders of the three largest bar associations in New York state came together to discuss how New York’s legal community could be of service in a time of critical need for the city and its residents. They agreed to divide up the substantial work required to address the aftermath: the New York County Lawyers Association would handle death certificates and estate issues, the State Bar would coordinate finding space and resources for the lawyers who had had their offices shut down or destroyed,…
On August 23, 434 first-year J.D. students joined together to take their oath of professionalism as a part of their orientation programming. The oath of professionalism is a pledge taken by students to act ethically and with integrity in law school and in their legal careers. Every year, as part of their orientation to Fordham Law School, new students come together to formally take their oath at a ceremony joined by faculty and alumni. It’s an important opportunity for new students to hear from a panel of experienced alumni about the importance of ethics, what kinds of professional challenges they…
A key component of Fordham Law’s online Master of Studies in Law (M.S.L.) in Corporate Compliance is the in-person Compliance Colloquium, which brings students together for an intensive three-day program that mixes practical group exercises with networking sessions and presentations from compliance thought leaders. It is the only in-person component of the otherwise fully online curriculum that trains students in key legal and regulatory frameworks and equips them with tools and skills that are essential for compliance professionals. Due to the pandemic, the inaugural Colloquium, held in August 2020, was conducted entirely remotely, so students appreciated the opportunity this year…
