Murray Professor of Law Tanya Hernández’s latest book, Racial Innocence: Unmasking Latino Anti-Black Bias and the Struggle for Equality, with a book talk event on September 15. Norrinda Brown Hayat, an award-winning housing advocate and expert on housing law with more than 15 years of experience, will be joining Fordham Law this year as a full-time faculty member and head of a new housing clinic.    Hayat comes to Fordham Law after a long and varied legal career, with time spent working in private practice and at the Department of Justice before her pivot to housing advocacy and clinical work. Beth Schwartz, a retired clinical professor of law and former director of professional skills at Fordham Law, will be receiving the Outstanding Pro Bono Service Award presented by the City Bar Justice Center.   Schwartz retired last year after more than 30 years of teaching at Fordham Law, where she spearheaded several in-house clinics, the Fundamental Lawyering Skills program, the J.D. Externship program, and the Pro Bono Scholars program. She also created Fordham’s Litigation Skills Clinic, the Law School’s first in-house clinic. This year’s Public Service Day, hosted by the Public Interest Resource Center (PIRC) and held on Aug. 20 as part of first-year orientation, featured a variety of activities for first-year students to get involved in across the city, including virtual educational events and in-person service opportunities.  In total,159 students participated in 12 student-led projects, according to Mia Jackson-Rosenthal, PIRC’s director of student engagement and counseling. “Public Service Day was, in my estimation, a tremendous success,” said Jackson-Rosenthal. “Based on the turnout, it is clear that students are committed to Fordham Law’s motto of being ‘In the service of others.’” Free…

Fordham Law welcomes 161 new graduate students for the fall 2022 semester—104 students in nine LL.M. degree specializations, including two students in the new online LL.M. program in Corporate Compliance; five students in the in-person M.S.L. programs; 39 students in the online M.S.L. programs in Corporate Compliance; and five doctoral degree candidates who will be working under the supervision of Professors Paolo Galizzi, Martin Gelter, Sean Griffith, Russell Pearce, and Olivier Sylvain.  This new group of students joins the 42 LL.M. students, 117 M.S.L. students, and six doctoral candidates who are continuing their studies, for a total of 326 graduate…

The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) Westin Scholar Award was presented this year to Ilana Blumenthal ’22. The award was created in 2020 as a way to “support students who are identified by their professors as future leaders in the field of privacy or data protection,” according to the IAPP. Professor James Brudney has been appointed faculty director of Fordham Law’s Center for Judicial Events & Clerkships (CJEC), succeeding Professor Daniel Capra, who served as the founding Faculty Director for the CJEC. Since 2019, the CJEC has designed a number of innovative programs to engage members of the judiciary in the life of the law school such as its’ Jurist in Residence Program, First to the Bench, Judges Weeks, and View from Chambers Program. The report was picked up by a number of media outlets, including the New York Law Journal, NY1, and the New York County Lawyers Association’s Amicus Curiae podcast.
