A Preview of Fall Events At Fordham Law

This fall semester, Fordham Law is excited to host a number of exciting and enriching events that will provide opportunities for students, faculty, and alumni to explore a fascinating array of legal topics. 

Here is a preview of only a few of the symposia, celebrations, and discussions planned this semester. For the full listing of events, please visit our online events calendar.

September 14–16: The ​​49th Annual Conference on International Antitrust Law and Policy
The Competition Law Institute’s annual conference, considered one of the most prominent in the field, will bring a number of distinguished speakers to the Law School, including Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan and Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development Competition Committee Chair Frédéric Jenny. Held over three days, the conference will feature workshops, panels, and networking sessions for participants.

September 15: Author Meets Reader Book Launch with Professor Tanya Katerí Hernández
Professor Hernández’s new book,
Racial Innocence: Unmasking Latino Anti-Black Bias and the Struggle for Equality, is the first comprehensive book on anti-Black violence in the Latino community. To celebrate its publication, the Law School will host a discussion on the book’s themes between the author and Pablo José López Oro, professor of Africana Studies at Smith College; Abraham Tejeda, associate human rights specialist at the New York City Commission on Human Rights; and Juliet Mureriwa, senior program officer at the Ford Foundation. A limited number of complementary copies of the book will be provided to attendees.

September 29: CJEC Fireside Chat with Associate Judge Madeline Singas 
The Center for Judicial Events & Clerkships (CJEC), along with the Office of the Dean and the Fordham Law Alumni Association, will host an intimate conversation with Associate Judge Madeline Singas ’91 of the New York State Court of Appeals. The event will be moderated by Dean Matthew Diller.

October 7: Fordham Intellectual Property, Media & Entertainment Law Journal Symposium,“Duplicate, Decolonize, Destroy: Current Topics in Art and Cultural Heritage Law”
The
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media & Entertainment Law Journal will hold a full day symposium on the latest topics in art and cultural heritage law, including panel discussions on the decolonization of art institutions, cultural property during times of conflict, and fair use. The event will be held in person at the Law School and broadcast live via Zoom.

October 14: Fordham Urban Law Journal Cooper-Walsh Colloquium, “Local Government Structure Through a Legal Lens: Conversations of Law and Local Governance”
The
Urban Law Journal will kick off its 50th year of publication with a colloquium on the topic of local governance. The event will bring together scholars and practitioners in a hybrid in-person and Zoom setting, with the aim of “deepening the emerging scholarly discourse surrounding local government institutions, at a time when local governments are more important than ever.”

October 28: Fordham Law Review Symposium, “An Anomalous Status: Rights and Wrongs in America’s Territories”
This year’s
Fordham Law Review symposium looks at the laws specific to American territories— including Puerto Rico and Guam—and at the “Insular Cases,” a series of U.S. Supreme Court decisions that found that citizens of these territories did not have the same constitutional rights as other American citizens. The symposium provides an opportunity for participants to learn about an under-discussed element of American constitutional law from a panel of experts in the field.

November 1: The Law and Neuroscience of Mass Shootings
Fordham Law’s Neuroscience and Law Center offers a unique perspective on the topic of mass shootings, bringing together legal experts, criminologists, and psychiatrists to tackle this important topic through the perspectives of both science and the law. With mass shootings increasing steadily in the last decade, including the recent tragedy in Uvalde, Texas, this first of its kind symposium could not be more timely.

November 1: Global Anti-Racism Symposium
The newly launched Global Anti-Racism Clinic will host its first symposium on the subject of the United Nations anti-racism mechanisms. The event, which will feature representatives from multiple U.N. departments, will be held the day after the U.N. General Assembly is scheduled to discuss the topic of anti-racism measures.

November 9: The Center on Asian Americans and the Law’s Official Launch Event
Fordham Law celebrates the launch of the new Center on Asian Americans and the Law. The first of its kind on the East Coast, the center will educate students, lawyers, and the public on AAPI issues, act as a hub for research and scholarship, and perform outreach to promote AAPI causes. The center will also host speaker panels, organize research in the form of digital repositories and e-casebooks, and provide opportunities for students to get involved in its work.
